Family Search: The family history site of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Includes the IGI (International Genealogical Index)
Ancestry.co.uk: A subscription site with an outstanding collection of UK Census and BMD (birth marriage and death) records. Now also includes a wonderful treasure trove of Parish Registers from the London Metropolitan Archive
The Origins Network: Another subscription site with a large collection of online census and other records, including the fantastic Surrey Wills collection. Note: this collection has now been acquired by FindMyPast (see below).
FindMyPast.com: A ‘pay-to-use’ site which now hosts the 1911 UK Census online
GEN UKI: A "virtual reference library" of genealogical information that is of particular relevance to the UK & Ireland. A great starting-point and a real treasure trove
Genes Reunited: A popular subscription site where family research interests can be registered and searched. Highly recommended
The Genealogist: Another subscription site, containing various transcribed parish registers as well as parts of the PCC Wills collection
The General Register Office: Where the BMD index can be searched and certificates ordered online
The National Archives: Web site featuring a vast collection of scanned images of original PCC Wills and other valuable documents

Cyndi’s List: A comprehensive list of genealogy sites on the Internet
Clergy of the Church of England Database: 1540 to 1835 - searchable online
Commonwealth War Graves Commission: The ”Debt of Honour Register”, a searchable database of the fallen in both World Wars
Cricket Archive: Biographical information and match records about every cricketer there ever was
Gazette Gateway: For free full-text searching of the London, Edinburgh and Belfast Gazettes. Invaluable!
Geograph: Photos of locations in the British Isles, aiming to cover every square of the National Grid. Fascinating and well worth supporting. A special copyright licence allows reuse of photos (visit the site for details)
Gravestone Photographic Resource Project: An excellent initiative to make available as many gravestone images as possible on the internet. Well worth supporting
Historical Directories: A searchable digital library of historical local and trade directories from 1750 to 1919
Hugh Wallis’s genealogical web sites: A collection of useful resources including the excellent ”Middle Name Index”
Internet Archive: A valuable free collection of nearly 2 million historical books in digital format - a great treasure trove for genealogy researchers
JewishGen: The home of Jewish Genealogy. Registration is necessary but does not cost anything
Mapcon - Genealogy Software & Resources: An impressive collection of useful links and resources, include how-to guides and worksheets, mostly US-oriented. Thanks to Emily from Colorado for discovering it!
Parish Chest: Described as an Online Genealogical Fair, a great “lucky dip” site with lots of resources for the family history researcher
Scotland’s People: For searching Scottish Census and BMD records. Pay to view
ThePeerage.com: A genealogical database of Peers of the Realm and their families
Western Australian Genealogical Society: Contains many very useful links to BMD and other searchable databases in Australia
New Zealand - Births Marriages and Deaths Online: A very simple and powerful search function is provided by New Zealand’s Birth, Death and Marriage Historical Records website.

Chertsey Cricket Club: The ”History” page on the web site of this famous club
Newspaper Detectives: A site where you can search for names contained in news items in the ”Surrey Advertiser” for various years in the 19th century
Genealogy in Hertfordshire: Site contains an outstanding collection of “How To” tips and other resources not found anywhere else
