William Hamlyn (1832-1909)

William Hamlyn (1832-1909)

A superb portrait from the Metropolitan Fire Museum, probably taken in 1889, on the occasion of his retirement from the brigade, wearing his service medal. He entered the fire service in the 1850s, and in 1881 he was Superintendent at the Fire Station at 44 Renfrew Rd, Lambeth. The Good Service Medal was awarded by the Metropolitan Board of Works, and William received it from the hands of HRH The Duke of Cambridge on 3 July 1884.
William’s nephew, John Frederick Hamlyn, married Elizabeth Carter Newell (daughter of William John Newell and Alice Rebecca Attfield) in 1895.
With thanks and acknowledgements to Adrian Hamlyn.
